Food memories are powerful

The other day I ran in from work starving because I had worked through lunch. I looked for something to eat and grabbed a rotisserie chicken we had in the fridge. Leaning over the kitchen sink, enjoying a leg, it hit me that some of the best things are eaten over the kitchen sink.

I remember being at my grandparent's house in Georgia eating a slice of fresh watermelon over the sink. Juice dripping everywhere and as happy as I could be!

The very best fresh peaches I've had were, you guessed it... eaten over the sink. Juice all over my face and juice running down my elbows. (That's the sign of a GOOD peach!)

Sneaking a slice of leftover birthday cake, not wanting to use a plate as evidence, but trying to keep crumbs from dropping everywhere.

Then it made me wonder, is it the action of eating the food or is it the memory that it sparks?

Food memories are some of the strongest connections we have and everyone has them. A smell, a taste or a sound can trigger them without you even realizing it.

Now that I'm older, some of those memories are bittersweet. They make me miss my Dad, wish my Mom was still able to make those amazing dishes and wish we could step back in time and have those family times around our table in our old house just one more time.

Don't brush aside your food memories when they hit you. Take a minute to enjoy the emotion that comes with them. Let them bring you happiness for being able to experience those times again. ~Lisa
