This is a simple way to save and store green onions to use them for months ahead.
This method can be used with store bought green onions or garden grown.
Directions
If you’re using green onions from the garden, loosen the soil around the roots and pull a bunch at a time so the green tops are not ripped off.
Cut the root base off the onions.
Rinse well. Chop into the size that you like.
Place the onions into an ice cube tray. (You’ll want to not use this tray to make ice in the future, but save it to use this method to store fresh herbs and more onions.)
Carefully fill the tray with water. Freeze the tray overnight.
Pop the frozen onion cubes out of the tray and place them into a ziplock bag. Be sure to label it so you’ll know when you put these in the freezer. They will be good for use for many months.
We love to use these onion cubes when we’re making Kitcheneez Sassy Salsa, Chicken Tortilla Soup and Cowboy Caviar!
To use these in a dish that doesn’t get cooked, allow a cube to thaw before adding. If the dish is cooked, just pop a cube in while cooking.
